Frequently Asked Questions

  • THE PROCEDURE
Upon arrival you will be asked to fill out a consent form (forms will also be supplied upon booking so you can read in the comfort of your own home prior to your appointment) and a topical anaesthetic cream will be applied to numb the area before we complete the design process. Please be aware that your appointment time includes 30 minutes of numbing time so please DO NOT ARRIVE LATE TO YOUR APPOINTMENT. Your technician will carefully design your start, arch and tails to represent the shape we intend on creating. Feel free to bring photos of the way you normally draw in your brows. Numbing cream is continually applied throughout the procedure for added comfort. Although you might feel the contact of the “etching” onto the skin, our clients describe the sensation as “like having your eyebrows tweezed”. All cosmetic tattoo procedures with The Skin Studio by Emma James require a 2-treatment process to complete the final result. Failure to miss your second treatment will outcome in the cosmetic tattoo to not look complete and incorrect as it has not been finalised. You may need additional touch up work after your first 2 step procedure as there can be factors and reasons as to why the pigment can fade quicker this can be down to your skin type, products, environmental factors which are all out of our control.
  • HEALING
The colour will appear quite dark for 48 hours immediately after the treatment then begin to fade away for the days to follow. In some cases, clients have experienced 30-50% of the colour fading out of the skin in the first week. We always choose a conservative colour during the first treatment as we never know how the skin will take the pigment. We can always “build on” colour at the 6-8 week touch-up. We try to create the same colour as your natural brow so that the additional strokes around the tattoo will go undetected, often using a blend of colours. You may experience symptoms such as minor swelling and redness, mild tenderness, itchiness in the brow area, dry flaking skin. Please note that these symptoms are a normal part of the healing process. The approximate healing period is 10-14 days, however healing can be prolonged if your immune system is compromised, if you are generally stressed and also by poor diet.
  • AFTERCARE
Proper care following your enhancement is necessary to achieve the best results. We recommend you do not get the area wet for 10 days. You will be given an after-care sheet on the day of your treatment to take with you. Please review the following instructions and refer to them as necessary. If during the healing process you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact us. You are unable to use any oils, active ingredients, rich moisturisers or toners on the skin for 10 days. Makeup can be used as normal but must not come into contact on the brows and surrounding areas. We recommend cleaning the skin or removing makeup with a damp face washer, disposable facial wipes or miceller water and cotton rounds. Remove eye makeup in a downward direction and do not scrub or wash the brows for 10 days.
  • REFRESHMENTS
We recommend a refreshment appointment every 12-18 months to keep the brow strokes looking defined, rather than a “wash” of blurred colour. The blurring will occur due to exposure to the elements and product use. Oilier skin types have been known to require a 6-9 month refresh time frame as the pigment will fade at a much faster rate.
  • SKIN TYPES
Clients who are heavy users of “active” ingredients in their skincare such as retinol, AHA and vitamin A, C and E are not recommended to undergo this treatment. We recommend that clinets with oily skin types must exfoliate well before an appointment. For best results please do this for up to 7 days prior. Oily skin types will soften the pigment in the skin more so than dryer skin types. Oily skin may require more frequent colour boosts as they are likely to fade quicker. Hairstrokes will hold much better and crisper in dry skin and are less likely to fade as quickly as someone with oily skin.
  • Who is Cosmetic Tattooing treatment not suitable for?
You must be over the age of 18 years of age to receive this procedure. Please inform us if you are taking any medication, or have suffered from any illness or virus within the last 6 months. You cannot receive permanent cosmetics if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Below is a list of medical conditions that are at greater risk of unpleasant side effects and should be checked by a Doctor for medical clearance: - Chemotheraphy Patients - Diabetes - Glaucoma - Bleeding disorders such as haemophilia, platelet disorders or sickle-cell anaemia - Heart conditions or uncontrolled high blood pressure - Artificial heart valves or joints - Excessive Keloid scared skin - Dermatitis or Eczma in the tattoo area - Sunburnt Skin - Extremely senstitve skin - Keratosis - Use of certain medications such as blood thinners or topical steriods *Avoid taking Aspirin, FishOil, Niacin, Vitamin E and/or Ibuprofen unless medically necessary, for at least 72 hours prior to your procedure. • What happens to my eyebrow hair?
No waxing/shaving is allowed on the day of the appointment although, we may tweeze some stray hairs to assist with creating desired shape. If you have natural brow hairs, your artist will work with what you have, subtly integrating their work to suit your natural brow style. Regular brow maintenance, such as waxing and tweezing hairs outside of the tatooed shape and tinting natural hairs, is still recommended for best results.
  • How many treatments do I need?
Two treatments are usually needed, at least 6-8 weeks apart. Sometimes just one treatment is sufficient. With most procedures, the colour fades dramatically after a week. For the second treatment, the technician gauges the colour retention and adds the required amount of pigment.
  • What should I expect after the treatment?
Brows tend to look darker in colour immediately after the appointment, this softens in a few days.
  • How long will the treatment last?
This varies from person to person because skin type, diet, genetics and environmental factors can all contribute to how long the pigments will be retained. As a guide, it could be anything between one to five years before a new treatment is required, although refresher colour boosts are recommended for maintenance during this time. Once the colour starts to change you will know that you are ready for your refresher colour boost. It is important to remember that permanent make-up is a “low”, not a “no” maintenance treatment.
  • Is it painful?
Anaesthetic is applied before and throughout entire procedure to ensure you are comfortable. Every person's pain threshold varies, but personal circumstances such as a recent cold/flus, stress levels and your menstrual cycle can sometimes impact your comfort during the procedure. Clients have described the treatment to be very comfortable with the pain being compared to tweezing.
  • Is there risk of infection?
There is a minimal risk of infection as strict hygiene standards are maintained. Sterile needles from sealed packets are used once only. To prevent cross contamination, the technician wears sterile gloves. Strict after care rules are given to the client at the end of each treatment.
  • Will I be allergic to the treatment?
A skin test patch is offered upon request. However, an allergic reaction to pigments/dyes can occur immediately after or manifest years later whether or not skin test patch is preformed. Allergic reactions are extremely rare.
  • What factors will affect Semi-Permanent Makeup?
    - Exposure to sun rays, the sun fades the pigment faster so sun block must be used to prolong your enhancement. - Excessive sweating - Treatments with body scrubs, exfoliating acid and active ingredients - No corrective procedure after the healing period - Chlorine (for swimmers) - Heath problems (e.g. anaemia) - The speed at which the skin absorbs the pigment - The choice of colour. Some colours fade quicker than others, e.g. a blonde colour will fade quicker than a dark brown colour. - Oily skin tends to lose colour more quickly than other skin types
